Potential of Nephroprotective Effect of Ethanol Extract of Kepok Banana Peels on Cisplatin-induced Wistar Rats
Abstract
The use of cisplatin as an antineoplastic drug in cancer treatment is known for many years worldwide. Nephrotoxicity is one of the main side effects. Several studies have found that the ethanol extract of banana peels contains high levels of antioxidants, which play a role in counteracting free radicals that trigger nephrotoxicity induced by cisplatin. Further studies are needed to determine the potential protective effect of Kepok banana peel extract against cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity. Therefore, we conducted a randomized experimental design to examine the potential of ethanol extract of Kepok banana peels (EEKBP) as a nephroprotective on cisplatin-induced rats. The phytochemical screening showed that EEKBP contained flavonoids, saponins, tannins, and glycosides. Kidney function was evaluated based on the urea and creatinine levels. Statistical analysis with the independent t-test showed significant differences in the mean levels of urea and creatinine between; group B (only Cisplatin) and group C (only EEKBP 285 mg/kgBW), group D (EEKBP 285 mg/kgBW +Cisplatin) and group E (EEKBP 570 mg/kgBW +Cisplatin), and between group C (only EEKBP) and group E (EEKBP 570 mg/kgBW +Cisplatin). Histology analysis showed the appearance of rat kidney tissue which was marked by a normal glomerulus, minimal congestion of blood vessels, and minimal dilatation of the tubules accompanied by a few inflammatory cells, but no cells experiencing necrosis. This study has demonstrated that the EEKBP has a potential role as a nephroprotective for kidney function in cisplatin-induced rats.
