Hepatoprotective Effect of Ethanol Extract of Kepok Banana (Musa paradisiaca) Peels on Cisplatin-induced Rats

Abstract

Cisplatin is a potent anti-neoplastic agent, a platinum-derived organic compound, and widely used as a cancer chemotherapeutic agent, but cisplatin also has important side effects, namely hepatotoxicity, nephrotoxicity, neurotoxicity, and ototoxicity. Several studies have suggested that the ethanol extract of Kepok banana peels (Musa paradisiaca) has a high content of antioxidant compounds that can overcome cellular oxidative stress that triggers cisplatin-induced hepatotoxicity. Thus, we conducted a randomized experimental design to determine the potential hepatoprotective effect of ethanol extract of Kepok banana peels (EEKBP) against cisplatin-induced rats. The phytochemical test showed that EEKBP contained flavonoids, saponins, tannins, and glycosides. Liver function was evaluated based on the Serum Glutamic Pyruvate Transaminase (SGPT) and Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP) activities. Statistical analysis with the independent t-test showed significant differences in the mean levels of SGPT and ALP between; group B (only Cisplatin) and group C (only EEKBP 285 mg/kgBW), group D (EEKBP 285 mg/kgBW +Cisplatin) and group E (EEKBP 570 mg/kgBW +Cisplatin), and between group C (only EEKBP) and group E (EEKBP 570 mg/kgBW +Cisplatin). Histology analysis showed an improvement after treatment with EEKBP in the rat liver whereas the normal hepatocytes were more dominant than lysed hepatocytes and in an irregular shape. This study has demonstrated that the administration of EEKBP has a protective effect that can improve the liver function of rats that experience hepatotoxicity as a result of being induced by cisplatin.
